10 Tips for Managing Menopause Symptoms at Work

Menopause symptoms can make it hard enough to get through each shift without also impacting your work. If you’ve been struggling with common perimenopause and menopause symptoms during your workday, a few changes might help alleviate your frustration and make you more comfortable.

At Piedmont Preferred Women's Healthcare, Makunda Abdul-Mbacke, MD, MPH, FACOG, provides warm, compassionate care to girls and women who need OB-GYN and urogynecologist services. These services include support and treatment if necessary during perimenopause and menopause.

How menopause affects you at work

Perimenopause and menopause affect women differently. However, some common symptoms are universal enough to be both amusing and frustrating. Hot flashes and night sweats are common, and poor sleep can lead to fatigue and difficulty concentrating.

Some women also experience mood changes or headaches that interfere with their daily routines. Not everyone has a boss or team of coworkers who support them. Even if you’re lucky enough to have an understanding workplace, maintaining productivity can be a drag when you want to lie in front of a cold air vent all day.

Here are ten easy ways to give yourself a better chance of surviving the workday with your mood and comfort intact:

Ten tips for managing menopause symptoms at work

1. Dress in layers

Lightweight clothing makes it easier to cool down during a hot flash. Keep a spare shirt at work if you sweat frequently.

2. Stay hydrated and ventilated

A cold drink helps you feel more comfortable when you overheat. A small desk fan also helps if your workspace feels stuffy.

3. Watch for hot flash triggers

Caffeine, spicy foods, and hot drinks can set off hot flashes in some women. Track your triggers to identify patterns and discover what to change.

4. Improve your sleep routine

Night sweats can leave you exhausted the next day. Keep your bedroom cool and try to maintain a consistent bedtime.

5. Move throughout the day

Sitting for long periods can increase stiffness and discomfort. Take a short walk or stretch between tasks when you can.

6. Keep healthy snacks handy

A busy schedule can make it easy to miss a meal. Keep something simple at your desk for days when you can't take a proper lunch break.

7. Use reminders

If brain fog makes it hard to stay organized, add appointments to your calendar and write down important tasks. These tools help you keep track of details when concentration slips.

8. Adjust your workspace

Move away from a sunny window if heat triggers your symptoms. Better airflow or a desk fan can also help you stay comfortable.

9. Manage stressful moments

Work pressure can feel harder to handle when you're tired or uncomfortable. Try a few slow breaths before a difficult meeting or take a short break after a demanding task.

10. Learn about treatment options

If hot flashes or sleep problems interfere with your work, lifestyle changes alone might not be enough. We can discuss hormone therapy and nonhormonal treatments based on your symptoms and medical history.
